The Rise of AI in Signage
Is there a place for AI in my signage?
AI is getting a bad name in the signage and print industry.
Some companies are choosing not to accept AI-generated designs, using their rejection of AI to differentiate themselves from competitors. Across the wider digital landscape, concerns about unconsidered content have also grown, with terms such as “AI slop” becoming increasingly common.
But is AI really the problem, or is it simply a tool that needs to be used correctly?
Can AI design my sign?
AI can be a useful design tool. But it isn’t a signage designer.
We’ve all seen AI-generated images that look impressive at first glance but somehow feel generic, rushed or just slightly… off.
That’s because AI can imitate styles, colours and visual trends, but it doesn’t understand the practical requirements of physical signage in the way an experienced designer does.
A professional signage designer isn’t just creating something that looks good. They’re considering the brand, audience, environment, viewing distance, available space and how the finished design will actually be manufactured and installed.
What is AI actually useful for?
We don’t think the answer is to reject AI altogether. Used properly, it can be a valuable part of the creative process.
AI can help with:
» Exploring different visual styles
» Developing initial concepts
» Visualising colours and layouts
» Improving image quality
For signage, this is where AI can be particularly useful: as a starting point.
An AI-generated image can help you show a signage company, “This is roughly what I’m imagining.” It gives everyone something visual to react to, discuss and develop.
But that concept shouldn’t be confused with a finished signage design. A sign has to work in the real world, taking into account things like materials, construction, scale, visibility, installation and the environment it’s going into.
AI can help communicate the idea. It’s the job of a signage professional to turn that idea into something that actually works.
Can AI create a production-ready sign?
This is where things get more complicated.
An AI tool might generate an impressive image of a shopfront, reception sign or illuminated logo. But an image on a screen isn’t the same as a sign that needs to be manufactured and installed in the real world.
A finished signage design needs to consider far more than how it looks. It needs to work with the existing brand and signage, suit the available space and viewing distances, and account for the building, installation method, materials, electrical requirements and any structural, safety or planning considerations.
AI doesn’t carry out a site survey, measure the building or determine whether a particular sign can actually be manufactured.
That’s where professional signage design comes in.
Does AI replace a signage designer?
We don’t think it should.
A sign needs to be visible, communicate clearly, suit its surroundings and be practical to manufacture and install. It also needs to work as part of the wider brand, rather than simply looking impressive in isolation.
AI can help generate the idea as opposed to a signage designer who brings the experience needed to turn that idea into something practical, accurate and achievable.
Should I use AI to design my signage?
This isn’t a simple yes or no.
Use AI where it genuinely adds value, to experiment with styles or communicate a concept to a signage company.
If you’ve already created an AI-generated image that shows roughly what you’re looking for, that’s useful. It gives us something to work from. Just don’t expect the image to be technically accurate or ready to send straight into production.
The process doesn’t end when the image looks right. It starts there.
How can The Sign Collective turn my AI concept into a real sign?
If you’ve created an AI-generated concept that you think could make a great sign, we’d be happy to explore how that idea could be brought to life.
We can assess the concept, develop the design and, where necessary, redraw the artwork so it’s suitable for signage production. We’ll also consider the materials, manufacturing process and installation requirements to create something that works in the real world.
The finished design can stay true to your original idea while being technically accurate, practical to produce and flexible enough to work across your wider branding and marketing materials.
So, don’t worry if your AI-generated concept isn’t technically perfect.
AI can help you imagine the sign. We can help you make it real.
Have an AI-generated signage concept you’d like to turn into an actual sign?
We can take your idea and work with you through the entire process, helping shape the concept, advise on the most suitable materials and construction, resolve any practical considerations and ultimately bring the finished sign together.
